• Description and objectives:
  The project aims at investigating a new method for the homogenization of climatic data, which is based on geostatistical stochastic simulation. We aim to design and implement a procedure that is appropriate for those situations in which the monitoring stations are located in extensive areas with different climatic characteristics. The proposed methodology should be extensible to situations in which the probability density function (pdf) of the candidate station is different from its neighbours' pdf which occurs, for example, due to local trends induced by local physiographic features.
  The mathematical formulation of the proposed algorithm (direct sequential simulation with local distributions) will be applied to the precipitation Benchmark dataset of the HOME project. The proposed method is applied to the Benchmark to assess its ability to accurately identify the location and magnitude of one or more breakpoints within inhomogeneous series, as well as its capability to reconstruct the temporal climatic variability, which is the most common reason to homogenize data. This study will greatly contribute for determining the best method of homogenization, to the extent that the proposed approach will be compared with state-of-the-art methods. Moreover, the software designed in the project is expected to be useful to homogenize real climatic databases (e.g. weather, air quality), as well as to interpolate and characterize the spatial uncertainty of various attributes.
  If the new method shows to be effective, it will open new perspectives for research on the homogenization of high temporal resolution data. Expected results of the project encompass: (i) an innovative homogenization algorithm; and (ii) a homogenization software available to the scientific community at no cost.
