João Moreira Rato
João Moreira Rato holds a degree in Economics from Nova University Lisbon (1993) and a PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago (2000). He has been the Chairman of Banco CTT since 2019 and the President of the Board of the Portuguese Institute of Corporate Governance. He is also a Senior Advisor at Morgan Stanley since 2015 and a Visiting Associate Professor at Nova School of Business and Economics and NOVA
IMS, as well as a Research Associate at the Systemic Risk Centre at the London School of Economics.
Previously, he held the following positions:
- Non-Executive Director of Omtel from 2018 to 2019;
- Between 2016 and 2020, he worked in collaboration with Oliver Wyman to set up and build up the Debt Management Department of the Ministry of Finance of Kuwait;
- From 2012 to 2014, he was the Chairman and CEO of the Portuguese Treasury and Public Debt Management Agency, IGCP, E.P.E;
- Between 2000 and 2012, he worked in Investment Banking in London at various institutions, including Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, and Morgan Stanley, and for a brief period at a Hedge Fund specializing in Global Macro strategy.
He is the author of the book "The European Debt Crisis: How Portugal Navigated the post-2008 Financial Crisis," published by Palgrave Macmillan in December 2020.
