Geo Informatics and Analytics

The Geo Informatics and Analytics field focuses on the study and application of techniques for the analysis, modeling and management of geospatial data, which are fundamental to creating innovative and technological solutions in response to global challenges.

This area combines geospatial technologies with data science to transform large volumes of data into strategic insights. As an interdisciplinary field, it can be applied in various sectors, such as urban planning, security, the environment and logistics.

NOVA IMS' training offer in this area is divided into the following programs:

  • Geospatial Data Science (b-learning and e-learning formats): Available as a postgraduate and as a master's, the program focuses on the analysis, modeling, and geovisualization of large volumes of geospatial data, and prepares professionals to apply artificial intelligence, programming, and data mining to geospatial projects.
  • Geographic Information Systems and Science (b-learning and e-learning formats): Available as a postgraduate and as a master's, the program trains professionals in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), using spatial data analysis and modeling techniques to solve geographic, demographic, and environmental problems.
  • Master's Degree Program in Geospatial Technologies (Erasmus Mundus): Recognized by the European Commission as one of the best master's programs in Europe, and taught in partnership with the University of Münster (Germany) and the Universitat Jaume I (Spain), the master's program prepares professionals to develop computational solutions to spatial challenges, by combining geospatial technologies, geographic information (GI), and data analysis.
  • Postgraduation Program in Geospatial Intelligence: With a focus on innovative solutions to global security and defense challenges, this course trains professionals to use techniques such as image processing, remote sensing and geospatial intelligence.

Get ready to lead innovative solutions in an increasingly digital world!

20 years after I first enrolled in higher education, I decided to take a step forward and invest in my education and career. Analyzing current job offers in the GIS field revealed that mastering GIS software alone is not enough; analytical skills, as well as proficiency in databases and programming, are required. In this context, I sought a master's program with an updated curriculum, flexible enough to balance with work. I quickly concluded that, within the portuguese educational offerings, the program at NOVA IMS best met my expectations, offering a promising professional path. After one semester, I reflect positively on this master's degree, which has been both challenging and rewarding, allowing me to explore new techniques and methodologies. I look forward with anticipation to the contents of the next semester and to the construction of my thesis.

I joined this master's program after completing a Post-graduation in Smart and Sustainable Cities so that I could deepen my technical capacity to plan and execute this kind of urban data project. From the very beginning of my experience, I learned from many excellent instructors who provided concrete case studies and projects to complement their lectures. I was regularly challenged yet supported throughout my academic experience, and had the freedom to pursue projects of my own design to consolidate my learning. I was extremely lucky to have Professor Marco Painho as my thesis advisor, who not only provided thorough guidance, but also arranged for additional direction from other specialized professors to help me realize and deliver my thesis project. Ever since, I have continued to benefit from the resources of my alma mater, both enjoying access to the facilities, programs and minds that are helping me to transform my final project into a new business.
