The Dashboard Challenge 2023 is an initiative by the partnership "Dados ao Serviço de Lisboa," promoted by the Lisbon City Council (CML), NOVA Information Management School (NOVA IMS) of Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL), and the Lisbon School of Engineering (ISEL) of Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa (IPL).
The Dashboard Challenge 2023 aims to promote and enhance the use of open data, with a focus on the data available on the Lisboa Aberta portal (https://lisboaaberta.cm-lisboa.pt/index.php/pt/dados/conjuntos-de-dados) , to accelerate the creation of knowledge about the city of Lisbon. It encourages young students to utilize their data analysis and information visualization skills to create impactful dashboards.
The developed dashboards should represent innovative ideas translated into creative visualizations that contribute to a better understanding of the city of Lisbon.
Objectives
Promote data literacy through the involvement of youth and universities;
Develop data-driven approaches to support the planning and management of the municipality of Lisbon, based on the concept of smart and sustainable cities;
Value the use of open data, particularly those available on the Lisboa Aberta portal;
Utilize data and Information Technologies (IT) to promote factual knowledge.
Participants
The contest is open to students enrolled in the 1st cycle of higher education during the academic year 2022/23;
The dashboards can be presented individually or by teams of up to three members;
The members of each team may be enrolled in different educational institutions.
The appointment of a team representative is required.
Timeline
Registration submission: from July 1st to July 31st, until 11:59 p.m.;
Project submission: from August 1st to August 31st, until 11:59 p.m.;
Pre-selection of applications: September 30th, 2023;
National Final: October 23rd, 2023.
Applications
Registrations are free of charge and are made exclusively by sending an email to novacidade@novaims.unl.pt with the subject "Registration for Dashboard Challenge 2023".
The ideas presented should be original, and participants declare themselves responsible for their authorship in all legal terms.
Participants in the challenge must use at least one dataset available on the Lisboa Aberta portal, and they may complement their work with other sources of open data.
There are no restrictions on the topics to be addressed, but the developed dashboards should aim to support initiatives that benefit the services of the Lisbon City Council (CML), as well as residents, visitors, and workers in the municipality of Lisbon. The dashboards should focus on decision-making processes that contribute to the improvement of the urban environment and quality of life in this territory.
The registered teams should submit their projects by sending an email to novacidade@novaims.unl.pt with the subject "Submission Dashboard Challenge 2023."
Evaluation
Applications undergo evaluation and pre-selection based on the defined criteria and awards;
In this phase, ten applications per study cycle will be selected to present in person before the jury at the final event;
The pre-selected applications are evaluated by the jury based on the in-person presentation during a public event;
Evaluation criteria:
- Originality and degree of innovation of the idea;
- Interdisciplinary value;
- Creativity.
- Relevance of the idea.
- Sophistication of the analysis.
- Scientific integrity and validation.
- Potential for utilization.
- Use of data from the Lisboa Aberta Portal and other datasets (e.g., INE, IPMA, etc.).
Final Event
The final event will have the following program:
Presentation of the finalist projects:
- The in-person defense will be exclusively conducted by the students of the participating teams;
- The participating teams are required to prepare a presentation with a maximum time limit of 5 minutes.
Evaluation and decision-making;
Awards ceremony.
Jury
The jury is composed of:
- A representative from the Lisbon City Council (CML)
- A representative from NOVA Information Management School (NOVA IMS)
- A representative from Lisbon School of Engineering (ISEL)
The jury has the final decision-making authority, as well as the interpretation, application, and resolution of any omissions in the current regulations governing the competition.
