NOVA IMS develops Walkability Index to assess senior-friendly urban areas

Detalhe da Notícia

The NOVA Cidade – Urban Analytics Lab, under the leadership of NOVA IMS Director Miguel de Castro Neto, developed a walkability index to assess how elderly-friendly urban spaces are. Tested in Lisbon's Parque das Nações neighborhood, the index addresses global trends of aging populations and urbanization, which significantly impact societal well-being and economic development. The research incorporated objective data to evaluate street conditions and proximity to essential services, revealing that walkability scores were lower near the parish boundaries, especially east of the Vasco da Gama bridge, where services are scarce.
