NOVA IMS Named Global Center of Excellence in Process Mining for the Fourth Consecutive Year

The NOVA Information Management School (NOVA IMS) has been recognized by Celonis for the fourth consecutive year as one of the 15 global centers of excellence in Process Mining for the academic year 2024-2025. Celonis, a world leader in Process Mining solutions, acknowledges its academic centers of excellence as key global hubs for applied education, curriculum development, and research in this field. Selected from over 700 educational institutions worldwide, NOVA IMS is the sole Portuguese institution in this elite group. This recognition highlights the work of NOVA IMS and Professor Frederico Cruz, whose dedication has been crucial in consolidating this prominent position in Process Mining.

Selected from over 700 institutions worldwide, NOVA IMS is the sole Portuguese one.

What is Process Mining and Why is it So Relevant for Organizations?

Process Mining is a technology that transforms data generated by information systems into actionable insights about real business processes. Using activity logs generated in real time, Process Mining uncovers, analyzes, and optimizes operational workflows, providing a detailed and objective view of how processes are actually executed.

How Does Process Mining Work?

Imagine a health insurance reimbursement process. Ideally, it would follow a predefined sequence of steps, but in practice, deviations, repetitions, and backtracking often disrupt the expected flow. Process Mining allows organizations to visualize this real-world complexity through detailed diagrams, highlighting discrepancies between the ideal model and actual practice—often resulting in a "spaghetti chart" that reveals the underlying chaos in processes.

With Process Mining, Organizations Can:

  • Gain a precise understanding of real processes, rather than an idealized version
  • Identify inefficiencies and understand their causes
  • Optimize processes, improving execution times and reducing operational costs

In 2023, the World Economic Forum emphasized Process Mining as essential for boosting efficiency in complex business environments, underscoring the value of this technology for organizational performance and adaptability.

Process Mining Trends in 2024

In 2024, Process Mining is at the forefront of four key areas: it enables faster, more accurate decision-making, with 75% of companies reporting improvements; it integrates with Robotic Process Automation (RPA), helping to identify tasks for automation; it includes predictive capabilities, driven by AI, that anticipate bottlenecks and risks; and it benefits from IoT integration, monitoring processes in real time in sectors like logistics.
