In an article titled "Artificial Intelligence on the razor's edge" published in Jornal de Negócios, Professor Miguel de Castro Neto, Dean of NOVA IMS, shares his insights on the ongoing European Parliament negotiations for the development of regulations on artificial intelligence.
"Believing that there are challenges, but that we are in a unique moment of opportunity, it is important to take into consideration the growing digital skills of the talent that is being trained in Portugal, namely in information management and data science, and ensure that we impose the rules and limits that are unquestionably indispensable...", says the teacher, emphasizing the need to establish a comprehensive legal framework that sets precise boundaries and imposes severe penalties for non-compliance in the application of artificial intelligence.
Simultaneously, he suggests that, ideally, European-level regulations should be designed in a way that preserves space for the opportunities provided by the analytical capabilities of artificial intelligence which, used in the right way, is capable of enhancing innovation, creating products and services, and promoting economic development and the well-being of people.
