NOVA IMS recently held its significant Graduation Ceremony for the academic year 2022/2023 at the Auditorium of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa's Rectory. The event, which was also live-streamed, saw a notable turnout as 819 students were conferred with their diplomas.
Demonstrating their support and acknowledgment, leading companies like the Instituto Nacional de Estatística, Banco de Portugal, SAS, Nokia, among others, granted various awards to deserving students. Alongside this, acknowledgment was given to nine professors who received merit awards for their dedicated work during the academic year.
This ceremony stands as a significant moment within the university, symbolizing the achievements of students and the appreciation for the commitment of faculty members, marking a proud moment for NOVA IMS and its academic community.
Leonardo Vanneschi, a distinguished full professor at NOVA IMS, assumes the prestigious role of Director at the MagIC Research Center, succeeding Tiago Oliveira. His appointment underscores a dedicated focus on advancing research excellence and fostering the professional growth of his peers.
With a Ph.D. in Computer Science and a distinguished international reputation, Vanneschi is renowned for his profound contributions across various domains, notably in machine learning, data science, and interdisciplinary studies. Notably, he has been consistently recognized among the 'World's Top 2% Scientists' by Stanford University since 2019, a testament to his significant impact and scholarly achievements.
Only 1 in every 1,000 researchers is annually included in the prestigious Highly Cited Researchers list. For three years running, Tiago Oliveira, a full professor and President of the Scientific Council at NOVA IMS, has been part of this exclusive group. This distinction recognizes scientists who have had a significant impact in their fields by publishing multiple outstanding articles ranked in the top 1% of citations within those areas over the past decade.
This year, 7,127 researchers from 67 countries were acknowledged, with 19 from Portugal. Tiago Oliveira's inclusion reinforces his position as a highly influential researcher globally. His work spans various domains, from technology behavior, IT addiction, and factors influencing academic success, to pioneering research in the emerging field of process mining, contributing to a healthier, more sustainable, and secure future.

At the NOVA Pedagogical Innovation Award, recognizing outstanding contributions within Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Guilherme Victorino, Full Professor at NOVA IMS, was awarded an honorable mention for his project titled "Learning Experience Design: Knowledge Management Case Study.
This recognition underlines Victorino's dedication to pioneering advancements in pedagogy, affirming his commitment to continuously enhancing the learning experience. His achievement in securing this honorable mention reflects his ongoing pursuit of innovative educational methodologies.
Miguel de Castro Neto, Director of NOVA IMS, and Mauro Castelli, Professor at NOVA IMS, emerged victorious in the NOVA's Research Impact Narratives Challenge. This challenge, sponsored by Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, aimed to showcase how research significantly impacts citizens' lives through compelling storytelling. The narratives presented highlighted social, economic, environmental, cultural, political, and technological impacts.
The Nova University of Lisbon's auditorium set the stage for celebrating the NOVA Doctoral School's decade milestone, offering comprehensive, cross-disciplinary training to doctoral students.
During this event, NOVA IMS professors Guilherme Victorino and Roberto Henriques received the prestigious 10-year commemorative medal from UNL's Rector, João Sàágua. Their exceptional and inspirational contributions were recognized, marking a decade of remarkable achievement.
The celebration underscored the success of the NOVA Doctoral School in bridging academia and professional realms. In his opening remarks, João Sàágua praised the School's "pedagogical innovation," emphasizing its mission to enhance institutional value and fill a crucial gap in student education.
Portugal showcased its groundbreaking strides in smart city innovation at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona, an event that gathered over 1,100 exhibitors and attracted more than 25,000 visitors. Within this transformative event, NOVA IMS took a leading role, highlighting Portugal's advancements in smart city technologies.
The Smart Portugal stand, curated meticulously by NOVA Cidade - Urban Analytics Lab with support from Oeste CIM, drew in over 8,000 attendees. This showcase emphasized pioneering projects that are reshaping the landscape of smart cities, garnering global attention for Portugal's innovations.

NOVA IMS proudly retains its quality certification seal post the APCER audit of its quality management system. The auditor reported no identified non-conformities, highlighting only one sensitive area and identifying four improvement opportunities.
APCER recognized several strengths: educationally, the institute’s prominence and the notable surge in student enrollment. On a corporate level, commendations were directed towards Top Management and the Quality Management Team's active involvement, employee dedication, investment in human resource growth, and the successful implementation of digital transformation processes.
NOVA IMS extends heartfelt thanks to everyone involved for their dedicated effort, pivotal in maintaining this distinguished quality standard.

This month, the Urban Analytics Lab at NOVA IMS took center stage during the 'Pizza Night' event, transforming into a hub for engaging discussions. This casual gathering, now deeply entrenched as a community tradition, unfolded as a unique celebration intertwining camaraderie and diverse flavors. Throughout this session, Professor Miguel Castro Neto delivered an insightful presentation on the principles behind creating sustainable cities, aiming to pave the way for a brighter future in our society.
