Hugo Martins holds a Bachelor's degree in Animal Science Engineering from the University of Évora and a Master's degree in Science & GIS from NOVA Information Management School (NOVA IMS). He began his research work at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Lisbon, focusing primarily on the application of geospatial concepts and remote sensing tools for the analysis and modeling of vector-borne diseases. He later joined the New Technologies Laboratory at NOVA IMS, where he focused on the development of WebGIS solutions based on open-source technology. Since 2015, he has been an external consultant at the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the European Commission, where he is responsible for the architecture and development of applications in the sector context. His main scientific and "geographic" interests are primarily related to the use and development of Free and Open Source Software in GIS, interoperability, and spatial modelling.
