On June 6th, the finals of NOVA IMS' Challenge - "Applica-te" 2023 competition took place. In this event, participants demonstrated once again that the future is realized through collective action.
Students from primary and secondary schools across Portugal were challenged to create an application that would contribute to achieving one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The applications presented stood out for their creativity and innovation, offering surprising answers to current challenges.

NOVA IMS is honored to announce that the Academy of Marketing Science (AMS) has chosen NOVA IMS as the co-host for the prestigious 28th AMS World Marketing Congress (WMC), taking place in Lisbon, in 2027. This selection was made following a proposal submitted by NOVA IMS and coordinated by professor Diego Costa Pinto, which demonstrated the excellent academic program that the institution is able to offer, as well as the culturally enriching experience for all involved.
NOVA IMS is pioneering the adoption of generative artificial intelligence in its classrooms through the use of Microsoft Azure OpenAI. This collaboration aims to innovate teaching practices, enhance education for current challenges, and promote positive changes in learning methods.
By strengthening the relationship between the university and companies, the collaboration seeks to leverage the potential of generative AI in the academic and business environment, positioning NOVA IMS as a reference institution for education and innovation while preparing students for an increasingly technological world guided by AI.
NOVA IMS and HolyWally have partnered to create a digital wallet for the institution's students, with an expected launch in September. This digital wallet is 100% portuguese and aims to promote the connection between academia and the business sector by strengthening students' digital skills and providing them with a modern university experience, enabling daily payments and personalized financial management.
NOVA IMS has signed a collaboration protocol with NTT DATA Portugal, a global business and technology consultancy, aiming to strengthen the cooperation between the academic world and the labor market, promoting innovation and allowing students from NOVA IMS a better integration in the professional world. The partnership involves promoting job opportunities in Information Management and Data Science, providing support for recruitment, and awarding a merit scholarship to the top student of the "Customer Relationship Management Systems" course unit.
We are pleased to announce a new section in our newsletter where we will be highlighting various Research Projects in which NOVA IMS is actively involved. Through the contributions of our teachers, students and researchers, we will provide insights into these projects, shedding light on their objectives and outcomes.
NOVA IMS was one of the seven institutions selected to participate in the pilot implementation phase of the Polen Project. The Polen Project, managed by the FCT National Scientific Computing Unit, aims to promote the practices and principles of Open Science and meet the needs of the scientific community in the management of research data.
NOVA IMS' team is comprised by Professor Leonardo Vanneschi, Elvira Costa from the Library and Documentation Services, and Cristina Oliveira from the MagIC Research Management team.
The Land Use and Occupancy Monitoring System (SMOS) consists of a set of services and processors implemented in DGT's technological infrastructure, which rely on Artificial Intelligence algorithms to produce a set of land use and occupancy cartographic products from satellite images and supporting geographic information.
The current version of SMOS was developed with the support of NOVA Innovation and Analytics Lab, and managed by Professor Guilherme Victorino, using innovative methodologies such as Design Thinking and Co-creation.
The Test Bed for Smart Buildings and Living Experience, managed by NOVA IMS' dean, Miguel de Castro Neto, aims to create an innovative, evolutionary, and adaptive ecosystem that provides SMEs and startups with the (physical/digital) infrastructures necessary for the development of demonstration, experimentation, and testing of new technological solutions aimed at smart buildings and living experience, in the PropTech, InsurTech, WorkTech, FinTech, HealthTech, and GreenTech verticals.NOVA Cidade: Urban Analytics Lab, in the component of information management and data science, for the development of new analytical products and services.
TB4SB will be based in Fidelidade Group's diversified ecosystem of buildings, where SMEs, Startups and Academies will have the opportunity to test pilots of applications/ software for smart buildings. This project has the support of
The JOULE Project is producing its first Conference on Data Journalism: Opportunities and Challenges, on November 10th, and it will take place at NOVA IMS. The participants will have the opportunity to learn from experts about different aspects of data-related subjects. In parallel, there will be a designated area with a poster exhibition, where you can present your research.

On July 20th, at 6:30 p.m., an R Open Class will take place, promoted by NOVA IMS Alumni. It will be an educational event focused on improving participants' statistical programming skills using the R language. Topics covered include data reading and exploration, data visualization using GGPLOT2, and training Machine Learning models using R.
The open class will be presented by Professor Ivo Bernando, Alumni President, Partner at DareData and Engineering. Join us to dive into the exciting world of statistical programming and expand your knowledge in R.
