NOVA Oeiras ocean analytics Lab

The NOVA Oeiras Ocean Analytics Lab applies Data Science and Artificial Intelligence to address challenges related to the ocean. Through applied research and collaboration with academia, industry and the public sector, the lab develops solutions that support the sustainable management of marine resources and drive innovation across the Blue Economy. Its areas of focus include smart port systems, predictive risk modeling, ocean digital twins, environmental monitoring and the detection of illegal maritime activities.

Mission

The mission of the NOVA Oeiras Ocean Analytics Lab is to advance the sustainable management of ocean resources through applied research and data-driven innovation. The lab connects academia, industry and the public sector, combining Data Science, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Information Management to tackle the key challenges facing our ocean.

Objectives

  • Innovate and Co-Create Solutions
Develop data-driven solutions that address critical ocean challenges, from sustainability and environmental resilience to operational efficiency and safety.
  • Collaborate Across Sectors
Work closely with industry, public organizations and academic partners to ensure that research is aligned with real needs and can be translated into practical applications.
  • Lead Research in Ocean Analytics
Advance the fields of ocean analytics, AI and Data Science, contributing to new methods for understanding, managing and conserving marine environments.
  • Educate and Empower
Equip emerging specialists with practical experience through research projects and innovation initiatives developed in partnership with industry.
  • Promote Sustainable Ocean Practices
Leverage data and technology to inform policies and strategies that support the protection and long-term sustainability of marine ecosystems.

Areas

  • Smart Ports
Use predictive analytics and AI to optimize port operations, including logistics, cargo management and safety, creating more efficient and sustainable port ecosystems.
  • Predictive Risk Assessment
Develop models that anticipate and mitigate risks in coastal areas, such as beach safety, environmental hazards and maritime traffic.
  • Ocean Digital Twins
Build digital replicas of ocean environments to simulate complex scenarios, assess environmental impacts and support planning and decision-making.
  • Sustainable Fisheries and Marine Resource Management
Apply Data Science and AI to monitor fish stocks, reduce bycatch and support sustainable fishing practices.
  • Detection of Maritime Illegal Activities
Use AI and data analysis to identify, predict and help prevent illegal activities such as smuggling, illegal fishing or human trafficking at sea.
  • Environmental Monitoring and Conservation
Collect and analyze data to assess ocean health, monitor pollution and support marine conservation efforts.

Projects

  • MarIA – Integrated platform for Artificial Intelligence models for the ocean
This project focuses on the maritime sector and leverages the potential of the vast data sources currently available (Big Data). Building on existing data infrastructures, the Internet of Things and operational systems, MarIA aims to develop a national framework for data governance and value creation. The initiative draws on Data Science and AI and brings together the collective expertise of key stakeholders through the creation of a Collaborative AI Model Platform for the Ocean.

  • Smart Port Lx
A project developed for the Port of Lisbon with the objective of transforming it into a connected, sustainable, safe and automated port. The initiative relies on intelligent infrastructure and equipment, qualified teams and modern management practices to enhance customer satisfaction, protect the environment and improve quality of life for the surrounding community.

  • Smart Beach
Partnership in the Coastal Management Pilot Project, which focuses on developing a digital platform capable of collecting and processing information from multiple entities, including the National Maritime Authority, local municipalities and public agencies such as the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) and the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF). The platform consolidates these data sources into a single system, enabling integrated analysis and interoperability with other platforms. This pilot will equip coastal regions with an analytical tool to support governance in areas such as prevention, safety, planning and territorial management. The Oeste region was selected as the pilot area due to its tourism potential and the characteristics of its beaches, including natural conditions and population density.

  • Portugal Blue Digital Hub
Partnership in a project designed to promote digital and environmental transition within the Blue Economy. The initiative supports entrepreneurship, develops solutions based on AI, Blockchain and Big Data, facilitates testing and demonstration of new technologies, attracts foreign investment and strengthens digital skills. Led by Fórum Oceano, the Portugal Blue Digital Hub brings together a consortium of 17 organizations, supported by a supplier network of more than 30 entities. The Hub focuses on using AI-driven technologies to digitize, decarbonize and circularize business processes and models. Through the Bluetech Testing Network, it provides a set of ready-to-use digital and testing services that foster an innovation ecosystem, accelerating the dual transition – digital and environmental – of SMEs and public-sector organizations in Portugal’s Blue Economy.
