Data Journalism Lab

Data Journalism: Tools to Investigate, Verify, and Publish

A good story often starts with a hunch. But does the data back it up?

Where can you find reliable information? How do you collect and cross-reference sources, identify patterns, test hypotheses, and separate facts from interpretations? And how can you turn your findings into a news story, chart, or map that tells the story accurately?

NOVA IMS is organizing a workshop that takes participants through the entire data journalism process, from the initial question to the final story. The workshop explores how artificial intelligence and data analysis tools can support journalistic research, help verify findings, and turn evidence into compelling stories, charts, and maps.

Using a real-world case study on housing in Portugal, participants will work with free AI, data analysis, fact-checking, and data visualization tools, exploring both their potential and the precautions needed to use them responsibly.

By the end of the workshop, participants will receive the NOVA IMS Data Journalism Toolkit, a collection of resources, tools, and practical guidelines they can continue to use in their everyday newsroom work.
