Biography

Jorge Portugal has served as Director-General of COTEC Portugal since 2016, Portugal’s leading business network dedicated to promoting technological innovation and supporting the growth of the business ecosystem. Previously, he served as an advisor to the President of the Portuguese Republic on innovation, entrepreneurship, and competitiveness, and also advised the Portuguese Government on matters related to innovation in public services. He is an Invited Professor at NOVA IMS, where he leads the Business Modelling & Analytics LAB, and teaches in executive education programs in the areas of management and innovation. At the beginning of his career, he spent around a decade in academia as a researcher, project manager, and engineering lecturer. He also has extensive business management experience, having led innovation and technology projects across the retail, banking, and information technology sectors. His academic background includes bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral studies in Mechanical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa. He also holds an MBA from NOVA School of Business and Economics. His research has focused on the numerical prediction of stratified geophysical flows, an area in which he has published peer-reviewed scientific work. More recently, he has published in the field of business systems modeling.
